Bloodwork and Nausea

So I’m putting a cut in place for those who get squeamish from vomit and blood stories…

Dr. Awesome gave me a lab order for an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test two weeks ago and asked if I would do it before my next pre-natal appointment.  OK… not a problem.  The lab opens at 5 a.m. and I can get it done before I go into work.

Well… being out of the house by 7:00 a.m. didn’t quite work out over the last two weeks so I just left at the normal time today and figured that I’d call once I got the baseline bloodwork done and just come in late.  On the way there, I was feeling a little bit nauseous and had to pull over to vomit… which ended up going all over my jacket and the front seat.  OK… not great but I had some plastic shopping bags and got some of it in there.  I wrapped my jacket in one and stuck it in the trunk, put a towel down on my seat, and continued on.

I got to the hospital, checked in to the outpatient lab, and went to have them take the baseline blood sample.  The vampire was someone I know quite well and he did a really good job of getting the blood painlessly.  They handed me the bottle of Glucola (the nasty flat orange Tang liquid they make you drink) at which point my eyes started rolling back and I lunged for the bathroom.  After vomiting AGAIN, I sat and quietly drank the nasty orange liquid… and hadn’t had it swallowed for more than maybe a minute when it came back up and I lunged for the lab sink.  (For the record, the only thing worse than vomit is cold vomit.)  At this point, both my vampire and I decided that it was cruel and unusual punishment for both parties to make me continue the test.

I came home, cleaned the vomit out of the front seat, showered, tossed my clothes in the washer, and went back to sleep.
